Star tenor Rolando Villazón returns to the Royal Opera as the epitome of the despairing Romantic poet, Werther.

Goethe’s original novel was a European sensation in its day, and Massenet’s Werther brings out all the intensity of its portrayal of the unrequited love and dashed hopes; atmospheric, tuneful and poignant.

Antonio Pappano, Music Director of the Royal Opera, conducted this stylish production by director Benoît Jacquot when it was new in 2004. He conducts again for this first revival, and with a cast that includes two audience favourites, Sophie Koch and Eri Nakamura.

Werther is sung in French with English surtitles.
