A special performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Yeomen Of The Guard, staged at The Tower of London to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry VII.
To mark the occasion the Carl Rosa Opera stages an extravagant new production with an all-star celebrity cast. All 73 Yeomen whom are former officers and sergeants of the British Services will be invited to the event to mark the occasion.
Featuring a cast of over 50 singers and actors elaborately costumed and accompanied by the full Carl Rosa Opera Orchestra conducted by Wyn Davies, these unique performances — commissioned by the Continental Airlines Tower Festival — are the first time The Yeomen Of The Guard has been performed in the Tower’s moat since 1978, and will be one of the only times the production can be seen performed within the space where the action is set.
The Yeomen Of The Guard, set in the Tower of London during the 16th century, is a tale of ill-fated love, intrigue and escape in Tudor England. A framed Colonel is to be executed in the Tower of London on charges of witchcraft. A mock marriage would cheat his betrayer of his estate. The court jester offers his sweetheart a bag of coins… and the plot is set.
This production also marks the 121st anniversary of The Yeoman Of The Guard’s first presentation. It first opened in 1888 at the Savoy theatre.
