A star-studded cast brings the extraordinary new LGBTQ+ musical The View UpStairs to London for the first time at the Soho Theatre.
Led by Tyrone Huntley in the role of Wes, the European premiere of The View UpStairs also stars the likes of Andy Mientus, Declan Bennett, Victoria Hamilton-Barritt, Cedric Neal and John Partridge, who will play Patrick, Dale, Inez, Willie and Buddy respectively. With such a beloved cast behind it, The View UpStairs tickets are expected to be in hot demand.
The show opens in the present day with the story of Wes, a young and budding fashion designer looking for a space to make his own. Unknowingly, the abandoned area he settles on was formerly the UpStairs Lounge, a vibrant 1970s gay bar in the French Quarter of New Orleans which was destroyed in a deadly arson attack in 1973. The incident killed 32 people and was the worst attack on the LGBTQ+ community until the 2016 Orlando nightclub shootings.
The View UpStairs explores this community and celebrates the lives of those forgotten through a soulful, rock and jazz score. The show brings to life their stories, taking the audience on a soul-stirring and exhilarating journey of seduction and reflection.
The musical began life off-Broadway in 2017, where it ran to critical acclaim, being described it as “a moving homage to LGBT culture, past and present”. It gained well-documented support from some of the LGBTQ+ community’s biggest advocates, including RuPaul. It has since been mounted in 10 new productions around the world, including in regional US and Australian showings. The show’s London run will also encompass a special gala night in aid of AKT, the national LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity, providing safe homes and better futures for people aged 16-25.
The musical is written by young up-and-coming artist Max Vernon, and will be directed in London by Jonathan O’Boyle (Aspects of Love, Pippin, Hair), with choreography by Fabian Aloise (Evita at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2019).
