The Tricycle theatre’s swift response to this summer’s public unrest explores The Riots through the words of those close to the events.
Writer Gillian Slovo has used sources from tweets by taxi drivers to moment-by-moment accounts by riot police to build a real-time picture of the riots as they unfolded. From interviews with politicians, police, teachers, lawyers, community leaders, victims and onlookers, The Riots analyses what happened, why it happened, and what we should do towards making a better future for ourselves and our city.
The Riots is the latest in a string of verbatim and tribunal plays to be staged by the Tricycle theatre, the venue dubbed by The Times “Britain’s leading political playhouse”. It follows acclaimed productions including The Colour Of Justice – The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, Bloody Sunday – The Saville Inquiry and Justifying War.
