Matthew Warchus directs Timothy Spall in this new production of Harold Pinter’s groundbreaking classic The Caretaker.
The Pinter play follows disturbed handyman Aston as he invites an irascible tramp to stay with him at his brother’s jumbled London flat. At first it seems that the manipulative guest will take advantage of his vulnerable host but, when Aston’s brother Mick arrives, an enigmatic power struggle emerges between the three men that is in equal parts menacing, touching and darkly comic.
The Caretaker marks a rare stage appearance for one of Britain’s best-loved actors. Spall, who won plaudits for his performance in 2014’s Mr Turner, is arguably best known for his role as Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter films, but the actor has built a diverse range of screen credits including The King’s Speech, The Damned United, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, Pierrepoint and All Or Nothing.
