Frederick Ashton’s Sylvia, set to music by Delibes, is based on the Greek myth in which a statue comes to life, Sylvia is abducted by the evil hunter Orion and her dead lover Aminta is restored to life through the intervention of the god Eros.
The title role was created for the great Margot Fonteyn, requiring a technical skill and classical elegance which would challenge any ballerina to the full.
