This massively acclaimed production of Pulitzer Prize-winning play Sweat, based on interviews with residents of a poverty-stricken city in America, makes a West End transfer.
Nominated for Best New Play at the Olivier Awards 2019 with Mastercard, Sweat tickets were quick to sell out at the Donmar Warehouse, so audiences will be pleased to have another chance to catch this brilliantly received production at the Gielgud Theatre.
Sweat is based on writer Lynn Nottage’s experience of living in Reading, Pennsylvania – officially one of the poorest cities in the USA – in 2011. The show follows a city suffering from the collapse of industry – full of heart and passion, but struggling to contend with the effects of de-industrialisation.
The resulting play is set in an all-American bar and focuses on the friendships, fears and mounting racial tensions between factory workers and residents – and how they led to a devastating outcome for the city’s residents.
The show was the first production of outgoing Artistic Director Josie Rourke’s final season at the Donmar Warehouse. It is directed by Lynette Linton, the new Artistic Director at the Bush Theatre.
The full Donmar Warehouse cast return for this West End transfer, including Leanne Best (Jessie), Osy Ikhile (Chris), Wil Johnson (Brucie), Stuart McQuarrie (Stan), Clare Perkins (Cynthia), Martha Plimpton (Tracey), Sule Rimi (Evan) and Sebastian Viveros (Oscar).
Sweat is a knock-out blow of theatrical force – provocative, grounded, witty and poignant. Don’t miss the opportunity to book Sweat tickets on OfficialLondonTheatre.com
