How would it sound if you stretched hundreds of silk strings around the trees and played them? From this came Stringraphy – an original instrument powerful in its simplicity. Based on the theory of the string and cup telephone, tightly stretched silk threads (some up to 15 metres long) form a geometric web. Stretched from wall to wall and strung with dozens of paper cups acting as tiny speakers, the effect is of a giant harp. As part of a national UK tour, the Stringraphy Ensemble will bring their magic to the Lilian Baylis Theatre. The pieces range from Michael Nyman’s Bird List and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik to traditional Japanese folk music and Mizushima’s own contemporary pieces. The Sunday matinee includes a Christmas medley and is ideal for families. Three performances only – come and be mesmerised!
