It’s 1942 in the idyllic village of Merton-cum-Middlewick and the residents are bracing themselves for imminent German invasion. However, there are more pressing matters at hand at the local vicarage, home to the Reverend Lionel Toop, his wayward former actress wife Penelope and Ida the incompetent maid.

A classic case of mistaken identity is the catalyst for rumours and cassocks to fly. The vicarage is overrun with bishops, nosey neighbours, more vicars and an escaped prisoner of war. Uniforms are lost, found, begged and borrowed and chaos runs riot. And just when things can’t get any worse, they do.
