Stephen Sondheim’s first musical, Saturday Night, written when the composer was just 23, is set immediately before the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and tells the story of a group of friends who dream of escaping their everyday lives in Brooklyn and joining New York’s glittering high society.

Saturday Night’s leading lady Helena Blackman rose to fame in the BBC1 Saturday night search for a West End star How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, in which she finished as runner-up to Connie Fisher. Blackman’s other stage credits include South Pacific, The Wizard Of Oz and Gypsy.

Tom Littler, who directs Saturday Night, is also the Resident Director on the West End transfer of another Sondheim show, A Little Night Music.

This production of Saturday Night was first staged at the Jermyn Street theatre in February, when it enjoyed a successful sell-out run and was described in Time Out’s review as an “all-singing, all-dancing train”.
