News of this reaches the gods, where the devious Loge (Philip Langridge) persuades Wotan (Bryn Terfel in his role debut) to steal it from Alberich (Günter von Kannen) and pacify the giants Fasolt (Franz-Josef Selig) and Fafner (Philip Ens) who have built Valhalla for them. And so begins the Ring, whose ripples of deceit inexorably build through Wagner’s masterpiece to a final tidal wave of destruction.
The new Royal Opera Ring, the first in the new House, presents the directorial vision of Keith Warner against the large-scale, lavish sets of Stefanos Lazaridis and the costumes of Marie-Jeanne Lecca. The Royal Opera’s own Music Director, Antonio Pappano conducts a cast that mixes familiar names with the welcome appearances of several Wagnerian voices new to Covent Garden.
