This year, Richard Alston celebrates both his sixtieth birthday and forty years of choreography with a special programme, which includes two world premieres at Sadler’s Wells and a new work created earlier in 2008 that has never been performed in London.
The Men In My Life is a celebration of the remarkable work that Richard Alston has made for male dancers. The programme ranges from an early solo, Strider (1971), through to choreography originally made for such outstanding dancers as Michael Clark, Darshan Singh Bhuller and Martin Lawrance, right up to the latest dances for Jonathan Goddard, nominated this year for the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.
The programme also features the world premiere of Richard Alston’s Blow Over, co-commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and Dance Umbrella, and set to the racing pace of Philip Glass’s Songs From Liquid Days; and new to London, Shuffle It Right, inspired by the idiosyncratic and jazzy songs of Hoagy Carmichael.
