Based on the novel by E. L. Doctorow, Terrence McNally’s script weaves together the story of three disparate groups in America. We follow the Harlem musician Coalhouse Walker Jr, a mother and her family in New Rochelle, and a Jewish immigrant who has come to America with his daughter seeking a new life. Along the way we’re introduced to the likes of Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, JP Morgan and Henry Ford.
When it first opened in New York in 1996 Ragtime won numerous awards, whilst its 2009 revival earned nearly as many plaudits.
The cast includes Louisa Lydell (Love Never Dies, Momma Mia!, Fame, Blood Brothers) and Rosalind James (Hair, Les Miserables, Gone With The Wind and Jesus Christ Superstar).
