Dickens’s comic masterpiece follows Nicholas Nickleby, left penniless on the death of his father, as he escapes the influence of his villainous Uncle Ralph and the tyrannical schoolmaster Wackford Squeers and embarks on a journey through 1830s England. Along the way he encounters a variety of eccentric characters including the warm-hearted Crummles Theatre Company.
David Edgar’s adaptation was a Laurence Olivier Award-winning success in 1980. He substantially rewrote the plays for this revival, which ran at Chichester last year.
