Bartók’s famous one-act opera, Bluebeard’s Castle received ecstatic reviews when sung in concert version in Glasgow last year by Péter Fried and Andrea Meláth and they will now repeat their performances in this fully-staged production. Strongly influenced by Hungarian folk music, this is a dark-hued study of a man whose soul is trapped in eternal loneliness unable to be freed, even by the love of his wife.
The Miraculous Mandarin was a collaboration between Bartók and the legendary, charismatic 20th Century choreographer Gyula Harangozó, founder of the Hungarian National Opera Ballet. This ballet, originally banned by the Hungarian authorities, tells a lurid tale of a Mandarin’s desire for a young prostitute.
