Measure For Measure begins in a vice-ridden Vienna which is loosely ruled by the over-permissive Duke Vincentio. For unknown reasons, the Duke suddenly announces that he is temporarily stepping-down from power (never a wise thing to do in a Shakespeare play) and hands control to the draconian and violently chaste Angelo. Within days of taking power Angelo is already stamping out any naughtiness in the town and condemning all transgressors to death. As the play progresses, however, it becomes clear that Angelo isn’t the angel he makes himself out to be… Mark Rylance plays Duke Vincentio while Liam Brennan plays Angelo.
