Shakespeare’s Measure For Measure is revived at the Almeida theatre.
Often termed one of the Bard’s ‘problem plays’ due to its dark humour and unsettling morality, Measure For Measure is set in a Vienna dominated by the sex trade. Vincentio, the Duke, seeks to return order to his city. He announces that he is to travel abroad and appoints the strait-laced Angelo in his place. Vincentio secretly disguises himself as a friar to keep a watchful eye on the new regime. When Isabella, a novice nun, finds her brother is sentenced to death for a sexual misdemenour, she visits Angelo to beg for his life.
Director Michael Attenbrough has assembled a stellar cast for this production of Measure For Measure, which includes Rory Kinnear, Anna Maxwell Martin and Ben Miles, all three of whom are regulars on the London stage.
Laurence Olivier Award-winner Kinnear has numerous credits at the National Theatre, where he was most recently seen in Burnt By The Sun. Maxwell Martin made her name there in His Dark Materials and has gone on to forge a highly successful career on stage and screen, including winning two BAFTAs for Bleak House and Poppy Shakespeare. Miles has just returned from Broadway where he appeared in Alan Ayckbourn’s trilogy The Norman Conquests, which originated at the Old Vic.
