Giacomo Puccini’s vivid and atmospheric tragedy of 1899 follows the misfortunes of Butterfly, a teenaged Japanese geisha who forsakes family and religion to marry an American naval officer in late 19th-century Nagasaki. After Lieutenant Pinkerton leaves, with promises of returning “when the robins nest”, Butterfly gives birth to their son. Two years later Pinkerton comes back, but this time he has his new American wife with him…
Long-time Opera Holland Park favourite Anne Sophie Duprels returns to sing the role of Butterfly. Manlio Benzi conducts a cast which includes a number of graduates of last year’s Christine Collins Young Artists scheme.
This new production of Madama Butterfly is sung in Italian with English surtitles.
