David McVicar presents a new production of Hector Berlioz’s most ambitious work Les Troyens in its entirety for the first time since 1972.
After the destruction of Troy, the Trojan warrior Énée sets out on a journey to found a new dynasty. He meets Didon, Queen of Carthage, and falls in love. But will Énée’s love for Didon prove stronger than his sense of duty?
Based on Virgil’s Aeneid, a book that Berlioz loved since his childhood, Les Troyens is an opera in two parts about the fate of nations and peoples.
A tour de force of music that ranges from fiery military marches to intense choruses, passionate soliloquies to lyrical love duets, the opera combines the sweeping theme of the rise and fall of empires with moving meditations on love and honour.
Playing as part of the London 2012 Festival, McVicar’s large scale production brings together one of the largest casts ever seen at the Royal Opera House.
Les Troyens is sung in French with English Surtitles.
