Updating the setting to an isolated 20th century industrial estate in the Eastern Block, Janaček’s powerfully rich score is sharpened yet further in a contemporary take directed by David Alden.
When her baby’s body is found on her wedding day, Jenůfa stands accused of murdering the child to clear the path for love. Her guilt is undeniable, plain for all to see.
But faced by a mob baying for retribution, Jenůfa protests – genuinely – her innocence. For it was actually her step-mother who committed the murder, for her sake.
With a contemporary edge that makes it feel even more relevant for today’s audiences, and conducted by ENO’s Music Director Mark Wigglesworth, American soprano Laura Wilde makes her role debut as Jenůfa, with Michaela Martens as her stepmother the Kostelnička.
Sung in English, with surtitles projected above the stage.
