Sit back and allow the National Youth Theatre REP Company to invite you into the world of Victorian England, where civilised society meets seedy Soho in a thrilling new adaptation of Jekyll And Hyde, penned by award-winning playwright Evan Placey (Consensual, Girls Like That).
“Everyone has another face they hide behind…” Placey’s female-led adaptation will interrogate the Victorian seperate spheres domestic–public dichotomy putting women centre stage, where they are completely absent in the novella. The result is a radical, fascinating reinvention of a classic thriller.
Inspired by the traditional repertory theatre model, the NYT REP Company course offers free, practical, industry-based talent development in drama and performance over nine months to 16 NYT members. The course culminates in three months of performances in the West End.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s original story, The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, which centres on London lawyer Gabriel Utterson and his investigations into the increasingly bizarre behaviour of his old friend Dr Henry Jekyll, is a popular object of adaptation for the stage, with over 120 stage and film versions of the tale alone. It has previously been adapted by the likes of David Edgar for the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse in a musical version which premiered in 1990.
The popular tale tells the story of Dr Henry Jekyll, a devoted scientist who is determined to make a chemical breakthrough that will solve humanity’s most challenging medical uncertainties. But Jekyll’s controversial research only results in the creation of an unintentional strain of drug that entirely alters a person’s personality. Becoming the unwitting subject of the experimental treatments, Jekyll accidentally unleashes his ultimate inner demon in the process – the infamous, reckless and dangerous Hyde.
Directed by Roy Alexander Weise (Mountaintop, JMK 2016 Winner), this classic tale of secrets, deceit and revenge will be brought to life by some of Britain’s most exciting emerging talent on one the West End’s most historic stages.
Please note: Jekyll And Hyde contains strong language, sexual references and strobe lighting.
Age Recommendation: 13+.
