Jefferson Mays plays 35 different characters, including the play’s creator Doug Wright, who travels to Berlin to interview Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a transvestite who has survived the oppressive regimes of both the Nazis and the Communists. Wright is transfixed by her stories of oppressive fathers and SS officers. But Wright’s image is challenged when the German press print accusations that Charlotte was a Stasi informant.

After opening on Broadway, I Am My Own Wife won acclaim, plaudits and a considerable number of awards. Mays won the 2004 Tony for Best Actor in a Play, as well as Drama Desk, Outer Critics’ Circle, Obie, Lucille Lortel and Theatre World Awards. Doug Wright received the Pulitzer Prize for his drama, which also won the Best Play Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics’ Circle, Drama League and Lucille Lortel awards.
