From its brooding overture and exuberant choruses to its virtuoso solo roles and the coloratura splendour of its ‘mad scene’, French grand opera makes a welcome return to the Opera House with Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet.

In a production created for them in Geneva by Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser, Simon Keenlyside and Natalie Dessay re-create their roles as the tortured Danish prince and his nunnery-bound lover, Ophélie. Under the conductorship of Louis Langrée, Robert Lloyd plays Claudius, the repentant regicide, while Yvonne Naef is the duplicitous Queen Gertrude. Completing an impressive cast, Yann Beuron plays Laërte and Markus Hollop the ghost, whose revelations of murder begin a sequence of tragedy from which few will escape unstabbed.
