The news that a government inspector is due to arrive in a small Russian town sends its bureaucrats into a panicked frenzy. A simple case of mistaken identity exposes the hypocrisy and corruption at the heart of the town in this biting satire.
Goverment Inspector is a new version of Gogol’s 1836 comedy, by David Harrower (Blackbird). Two stars of British comedy – Julian Barratt and Doon Mackichan – play the unscrupulous mayor and his wife, with Kyle Soller (The Young Vic’s The Glass Menagerie) as the incognito out-of-towner mistaken for the government inspector.
Directing Government Inspector is Richard Jones, who returns to the Young Vic following Annie Get Your Gun, The Good Soul Of Szechuan and Hobson’s Choice. His work also includes the Royal Opera’s Anna Nicole.
