When two red-hot republican gondoliers learn that one of them is the long-lost king of a Mediterranean island, they soon establish a decidedly egalitarian ‘people’s monarchy’, but the throne comes with a queen already in place which is bad news for the gondoliers’ new brides. Add an impoverished duke cashing in on his upper-class connections, toss in favourite songs like Take A Pair Of Sparkling Eyes, and you have one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s sunniest operettas.
