G & I is set over four days in 1944 as legendary stage musical star Gertude Lawrence returns to London to prepare for an ENSA tour to entertain the troops. Her commitments on Broadway, and her recent marriage to a American producer kept her away from Britain and contributing to the war effort. Therefore some felt she had neglected her home country. The play deals with her inner struggle and commitment to both nations.
The other two characters are an ENSA secretary and an American GI working for ENSA, who will be her accompanying pianist on the tour. A friendship develops between the two, as they discuss their lives, the problems in Gertrude’s marriage, her career, his homesickness, and the constant worry that some of his Jewish family will not survive the war.
The play marks the seventieth anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War.
