Mark Rylance reprises his role as the eponymous monarch in the West End transfer of Shakespeare’s Globe hit Farinelli And The King.

Claire Van Kampen’s enchanting play, which proved a hit at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, tells the story of one of the greatest celebrities of his time, the castrato Farinelli, and why the world famous singer chose to trade his fame and fortune behind for a life in the king’s court.

Set in 18th century Spain, it explores the dynamics between Farinelli and the royal couple, bringing to the life the mesmerising tale with many of the exquisite arias sung by the opera star during the 1730s.

Multiple candles, on-stage seating and live music recreate the intimate candlelit atmosphere of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, where the production premiered in February.

Directed by John Dove, Rylance is joined in the cast by Iestyn Davies, Rupert Enticknap, Sam Crane, Huss Garbiya, Melody Grove, Colin Hurley and Edward Peel.
