Internationally acclaimed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon puts his spin on the Brothers Grimm’s Cinderella, creating an enchanting ballet full of lyricism, elegance and wit for the Dutch National Ballet.
Set to Prokofiev’s magnificent score with sets and costumes by British designer Julian Crouch, the production elaborates on the traditional narrative with a fleshed out backstory for the lead characters. It sees a kind-hearted heroine making the best of life without her beloved mother, while over at the palace Prince Guillaume is chafing against the restrictions of royal protocol and princely duty.
The ballet originally premiered at Dutch National Opera & Ballet in December 2012 and received a rapturous reception from both audiences and critics alike. Its staging at the London Coliseum marks the first time the ballet has been performed on stage outside the Netherlands.
