A world premiere and a company premiere in an evening of sheer energy from the Royal Ballet.
Resident choreographer Wayne McGregor continues his series of art world collaborations in a world premiere for the Royal Ballet. With visual artist John Gerrard introducing a virtual landscape to the stage – astonishingly real but meticulously fabricated by the artist – real time portraits unfold to the enigmatic Tippett score Fantasia concertante on a Theme of Corelli.
George Balanchine’s Ballo Della Regina, presented by the Royal Ballet for the first time, uses music from Verdi’s Don Carlos. There is dazzling footwork alongside precision leaps and turns from the solo couple framed by a female ensemble in a work that has Balanchine’s uniquely sharp and vivid classical style.
The programme ends with Christopher Wheeldon’s award-winning DGV: Danse à Grande Vitesse, a tour de force of speed and vivacity to match composer Michael Nyman’s evocation of the French train the TGV. An immediate hit with audiences and critics, DGV is the final work in a programme that brings together classical elegance with contemporary drive.
