Zorro The Musical, the new stage show telling the story of the legendary Latino swashbuckler, comes to London’s Garrick theatre on 30 June (press night 15 July).
The musical, which has just completed a UK tour, is based on an original story by Stephen Clark (Martin Guerre) and Helen Edmundson (Coram Boy) and creative produced by famous Chilean novelist Isabel Allende, who wrote the best-seller Zorro: A Novel in 2005.
Featuring a score by popular Latin musicians the Gipsy Kings, choreography by Spanish dancer and choreographer Rafael Amargo and a cast of 30 actors and flamenco dancers, Zorro The Musical promises aerial acrobatics, sword-fighting and traditional flamenco designs.
Created in 1919 by pulp writer Johnston McCulley, the fictional character of Zorro has been featured in comic books, television series, novels and films, most famously in the 1998 Antonio Banderas film The Mask Of Zorro. The musical retells the legendary story of wealthy caballero Don Diego de la Vega, who assumes a secret identity to lead the fight against injustice in Spanish California.
Taking on principal sword-fighting duties in the title role is Matt Rawle, who was last in the West End playing Che in Evita at the Adelphi in 2006. His previous London stage credits include Baghdad Wedding at the Soho, Martin Guerre at the Prince Edward and Miss Saigon at the Drury Lane. Further casting for the West End run is yet to be announced.
Zorro The Musical is directed by Christopher Renshaw (We Will Rock You), with co-composition and musical arrangements by John Cameron (Les Misérables) and designs by RSC associate Tom Piper.
