The WhatsOnStage Awards happened last night and a couple of London’s newest musicals swept the board with big wins! Disney’s Frozen and Back To The Future – The Musical were both recognised for their incredible talent on and off stage, alongside some of London’s other hottest productions from the last year. Back To The Future – The Musical
Back To The Future won the coveted Best New Musical award this year, but that wasn’t all! Hugh Coles picked up the award for Best Supporting Performer in a Male Identifying Role in a Musical for his performance as George McFly, and the off-stage team was also recognised with Tim Lutkin winning Best Lighting Design and Gareth Owen winning Best Sound Design.
Disney’s Frozen
Frozen took home the most awards of the night, achieving a total of seven wins! The awards recognised the incredible production’s design, music, direction and choreography with wins for Michael Grandage – Best Direction; Stephen Oremus – Best Musical Supervision; Rob Ashford – Best Choreography; Finn Ross – Best Video Design; Bob King Creative – Best Graphic Design and Christoper Oram – Best Set Design and Best Costume Design.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella
Carrie Hope Fletcher broke records by achieving her fourth ever WhatsOnStage Award this year, winning Best Performer in a Female Identifying Role in a Musical for her role as Cinderella in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of the classic fairytale.
Six
The queens of Six took the crown for Best West End Show for the second year running! The competition was incredibly close this year, though, with Six winning by a narrow 7 votes!
Other winners on the night that you can still see in London include:
2:22 – A Ghost Story, which won Best New Play and saw wins for Lily Allen for Best Performer in a Female Identifying Role in a Play and Jake Wood for Best Supporting Performer in a Male Identifying Role in a Play. 2:22 has confirmed it’s coming back to the West End this summer with a whole new cast to be announced!
James McAvoy took Best Performer in a Male Identifying Role in a Play for the titular role in Cyrano de Bergerac, and Jamie Lloyd’s production of play itself won Best Play Revival.
Best Musical Revival went to Anything Goes, which is also returning to the West End this summer and Carly Mercedes Dyer won in the Best Supporting Performer in a Female Identifying Role in a Musical category.
