US star Brandon Victor Dixon will reprise the role he originated in the premiere production of The Scottsboro Boys when he joins Olivier Award nominee Colman Domingo and Game Of Thrones star Julian Glover in the West End transfer of the Young Vic’s hit production later this year.
Playing from 4 October at the Garrick Theatre following its huge success at the Waterloo venue last year, Domingo, Forrest McClendon and James T Lane will all return to the roles they have played in both the Broadway and Young Vic productions of Kander and Ebb’s hard-hitting musical.
Telling the true story of nine young black men falsely accused of an unspeakable crime, The Scottsboro Boys is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Susan Stroman and has earned plaudits both in London and across America for its powerful and dazzling staging.
While Lane will be familiar to West End audiences for his appearance in 2013’s A Chorus Line, the production will mark the West End debuts for Tony Award nominated stars Domingo, Dixon and McClendon.
Dixon returns to his role as Haywood Patterson following Broadway appearances in The Color Purple and his current starring role in Motown The Musical, while Domingo boasts US starring credits including Guys And Dolls and Chicago, and McClendon most recently played the title role in Julius Caesar at Philadelphia’s renowned Lantern Theater Company.
If the American cast members are looking for any tips, however, they will be in good hands with fellow cast member and London stage veteran Glover, who returns to play The Interlocutor following credits including Oliver! in the West End, The President’s Holiday at Hampstead and the National Theatre’s The Voysey Inheritance.
The leading quintet will be also be joined by fellow Young Vic company members Dawn Hope, Rohan Pinnock-Hamilton, Emile Ruddock and Carl Spencer. Newcomers to the show will include Richard Pitt and In The Heights’ Dex Lee, with further casting still to be announced.
The musical will follow a very different show into the Garrick Theatre, as Beatles’ celebratory concert Let It Be returns for a West End summer season from 9 July, closing on 21 September.
