Mitchell Tobin has become the latest young actor to take on the iconic role of Billy Elliot in the hit West End musical of the same name after taking to the stage at the Victoria Palace theatre for the first time last night.
The 13-year-old from Florida, who is the 36th talented youngster to take on the role, joins Elliott Hanna, Bradley Perret, Redmand Rance and Ali Rasul, all of whom will alternate the role of the young boy from a northern mining town who goes against his family’s wishes to fulfil his dream of becoming a ballet dancer.
Unlike many of his young co-stars, whose first experience of taking on Billy was in the London production, Tobin is already familiar with the acclaimed musical, having played the title role in the North American touring production.
The eighth American to dance his way on to the Victoria Palace theatre’s stage, Tobin said: “I feel very honoured to have been asked to join the cast of Billy Elliot in London. I am so looking forward to playing Billy Elliot again and I can’t wait to make my West End debut!”
Now in its ninth year at the Victoria venue, Billy Elliot The Musical is brought to the stage by writer/director duo Lee Hall and Stephen Daldry, who enjoyed similar success with the Oscar nominated film, and features music by Elton John.
The winner of numerous Olivier Awards, including the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Audience Award, the musical has now been seen by more than nine and a half million people worldwide.
