Leicester Square’s official and most famous ticket booth, tkts, has reached an important milestone this year. The half price ticket outlet will celebrate its 30th birthday on 10 August with a free ticket giveaway.
Over the last 30 years the half price ticket booth has sold a staggering 10.9 million tickets to more than 1,200 shows, making it responsible for one in every 39 theatre tickets sold in the West End.
To celebrate tkts’s birthday on 10 August the booth will be giving away one free theatre ticket to the first 30 people in the queue that day. People will also be given the chance to win an assortment of theatrical prizes on 10 and 11 August when scratchcards are given out in Leicester Square.
Located in the clocktower building in the busy square at the heart of the West End, tkts is run by the Society of London Theatre on behalf of the theatre industry. All profits are rolled back into the industry funding a range of activities including audience development initiatives and support young producers and actors.
Having begun life as the Half Price Ticket Booth in a small, wooden, green and yellow hut, the enterprise moved to its current, more illustrious, premises in 1992 before changing its name to the snappier tkts in 2001. The brand has continued to evolve over the years with tkts customers now able to buy tickets at a range of discounts up to 50% off the ticket price both on the day of the performance and up to a week in advance.
