The Mentor makes West End move

Laurence Boswell’s acclaimed production of Daniel Kehlmann’s compelling comedy The Mentor will transfer to the West End this summer.

Playing at London’s Vaudeville Theatre from 24 June to 2 September, with opening night for press on Tuesday 4 July, the production, translated by Academy Award-winning Christopher Hampton, marks the first time that best-selling author Kehlmann’s play has been performed outside of Germany.

Out in the German countryside, in a dilapidated art nouveau villa, two massive egos are soon to be set on a collision course. A sharply perceptive and compelling comedy about art, artists and the legacy of fame ensues.

The Mentor stars F. Murray Abraham (an Academy Award winner for his role as Salieri in Amadeus) as Benjamin Rubin, Daniel Weyman (Sideways, St JAmes Theatre) as Martin Wegner, Naomi Frederick (Hobson’s Choice, West End) as Gina Wegner and Jonathan Cullen (Doctor Faustus, Shakespeare’s Globe) as Erwin Rudicek.

The production is directed by the Olivier Award-winning Boswell, Artistic Director of Theatre Royal Bath’s Ustinov Studio, where the play recently celebrated a record-breaking run earlier this year, the most successful in the studio’s history.
