The Watermill Theatre’s successful production of Sunset Boulevard, which has been running at the Comedy theatre since December 2008, is to close on 30 May.
The show, which had already extended its run in London’s West End, will be toured in early 2010 prior to launching a new production on Broadway.
Directed by Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood, the Watermill’s production of Sunset Boulevard pares down Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Hollywood musical, performing it with a cast of actor/musicians led by Kathryn Evans and Dave Willetts.
After opening in the West End before Christmas, the production received four Laurence Olivier Award nominations in the categories of Best Company Performance, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical and Best Musical Revival.
Based on Billy Wilder’s 1950 film, Sunset Boulevard tells the story of Norma Desmond, a fading silent movie star who lives on the famous LA street of the title. Desperate to make it back to the top, she sees her chance when she meets young screenwriter Joe, but their relationship is destined only for disaster.
No new show has yet been confirmed to follow Sunset Boulevard at the Comedy theatre.
