This week we spoke to Francesca Velicu, who plays Clara in English National Ballet’s production of Nutcracker. Francesca was the winner of the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance in 2018.

1. My route into theatre was…

I was lucky enough to try all kinds of activities as a child and I stuck with dancing as it moved me the most. I went from studying in Bucharest, Romania to the Bolshoi Academy in Moscow. I have now been part of English National Ballet for eight years.

2. My dance idol is…

It has always been the ballerina Alina Cojocaru, for her artistry and work ethic. She has danced with the Royal Baller, English National Ballet and many companies around the world.

3. My colleagues would describe me as…

One of my friends from the company said “hardworking and positive”!

4. My favourite show is…

My favourite show that I would watch on repeat is the baller Manon, it has the most beautiful score and heartbreaking story.

5. The career moment I’m most proud of is…

Recently, bringing my inner Giselle to life in Akram Khan’s Giselle at Sadler’s Wells. It is such a powerful ballet and role, and the audience response was overwhelming.

6. The hardest part about my job is…

I think it’s that I’m part of a very competitive world. I try to not compare myself too much to others and follow my own journey.

7. If I wasn’t an actor, I would be…

I would’ve loved to be a figure skater.

8. Something people don’t know about me is…

I like to express myself through other types of art like painting and playing the piano.

9. The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is…

“Let the dance fulfil your needs” – William Forsythe

10. The one thing I wish I could tell my younger self is…

Keep believing in your dreams, you’re doing fine!
