Drama Desk Award nominated play The Other Mozart, which tells the story of Wolfgang Amadeus’ lesser known sister, will receive its UK premiere at the St James Studio this autumn.
The one-woman show about Nannerl Mozart, also a prodigy and keyboard virtuoso in her own right, runs at the Victoria venue from 8 to 19 September.
The unique drama, which stars the show’s creator Sylvia Milo as the overshadowed Mozart, is staged in and on a sprawling five and a half metre dress that engulfs the entire stage.
Though much of Nannerl’s story, and her music, has been lost through the passing of time, the drama was pieced together using facts, stories and lines drawn directly from letters sent by the Mozart family.
While Nannerl’s music is missing from the production, it does feature compositions by her better known sibling and Marianna Martines, who inspired Nannerl, along with original music by Nathan Davis and Phyllis Chen played on a variety of instruments, both those of the time and those more Stomp-ishly improvised.
The Other Mozart joins an autumn line-up at the St James Theatre that also includes Leslie Bricusse musical Pure Imagination, Hoagy Carmichael musical Stardust Road and a Christmas production of Around The World In 80 Days.
