Broadway musical Rock Of Ages is heading to London. The jukebox musical which mixes 80s rock hits with a classic love story, will open at the Shaftesbury theatre on 27 September after previews from 31 August.
Rock Of Ages, which was described by Time Out New York as “the Oklahoma! of 80s metal”, is set in 1987 in the Sunset Strip, Los Angeles, where a small town girl meets and falls in love with a big city rocker in LA’s most famous rock club.
The show has a soundtrack comprising some of the most memorable rock tunes from the decade of stonewashed jeans and Hypercolor T-shirts, including We Built This City, The Final Countdown, Here I Go Again, I Wanna Know What Love Is and the Journey hit made famous by Glee, Don’t Stop Believin’.
In addition to its five Tony Award nominations, the show has the slightly eccentric honour of holding the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest air guitar ensemble.
Rock Of Ages, written by Chris D’Arienzo, will be staged in London by the Broadway creative team, including director Kristin Hanggi and choreographer Kelly Devine.
The Shaftesbury theatre is currently dark after the closure of Flashdance in January. Rock Of Ages will open following Derren Brown: Svengali, which plays from 8 June to 16 July.
