Eve Myles is to follow the example of her Torchwood co-star John Barrowman this spring, by taking to the West End stage. She will join Zach Braff and Susannah Fielding in comedy All New People.
The piece, which is also written by American actor Braff, plays at the Duke of York’s theatre from February.
The tale of a 35-year-old trying to hide away from the world on his birthday marks Myles’s return to the stage having seen her profile rise since taking the role of Gwen in adult Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood in 2006. Before her sci-fi fame, Myles had performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), winning plaudits for her 2003 performances in Titus Andronicus and The Taming Of The Shrew, and at the National Theatre, where she appeared opposite Michael Gambon and Matthew Macfadyen in Henry IV Pt I and II.
Speaking about her casting, Myles said: “I’m delighted to have been cast as the character of Emma in such a well anticipated and funny play. Having concentrated on TV work recently I’m excited to be returning to the stage and I’m very much looking forward to working with Zach.”
Fielding, like Myles, has previously worked with both the RSC (The Merchant Of Venice) and the National Theatre (The Rose Tattoo, Philistines, Much Ado About Nothing), as well as appearing in Doctor Who.
Braff, best known for his role as doctor JD in hit US comedy Scrubs, plays the lead role in his play in which the depressing birthday, which is due to be spent in solitude, is interrupted by a parade of misfits who find themselves entangled at a beach house where the mood is anything but sunny.
All New People is directed in the UK by Peter DuBois, who previously directed the Almeida theatre’s 2011 production of Becky Shaw.
