If you’re not already ready, then you probably need to be schooled on how to rock. Luckily, there’s a place to go: School Of Rock – The Musical. The sensational Olivier Award-winning show has had all of London head-banging with joy, but if you’re yet to jump into the mosh pit headfirst, here are the facts you need to know.
THE BACKSTORY
The show is based on Richard Linklater’s 2003 film of the same name starring Jack Black. The film was a box office hit and was firmly placed in the cult favourites list
Due to its success and fitting subject matter, Andrew Lloyd Webber bought the stage rights. It was announced in 2013 that he would adapt the film into a musical after completing Stephen Ward The Musical.
The show was developed and Andrew Lloyd Webber kept the original numbers for the film but added a few new songs to bulk up the score.
The show eventually opened on Broadway in 2015 where it was met with sold-out audiences and critical praise. It was nominated for four Tony Awards among the numerous other nominations it received, and a West End transfer was planned quickly.
In late 2016, School Of Rock made its way to London and made what was then the New London Theatre (now the Gillian Lynne Theatre) its home. The quick West End opening was a surprise to all involved as a 2017 opening was expected, but Andrew Lloyd Webber revealed that finding the young performers was easier than anticipated so they could open earlier.
The production was a runaway West End success, and won an Olivier Award with Mastercard for its kids casts’ Outstanding Achievement in Music.
WHAT’S SCHOOL OF ROCK ABOUT?
The show follows Dewey Finn – a struggling musician who longs to be a rock star. After being kicked out of his band, Dewey is penniless and jobless. To meet rent, he disguises himself as a substitute teacher and lands a job at a prestigious private school. Out of his depth, Dewey ignores the usual curriculum and focuses on the musically talented youngsters. Dewey forms a band with the fifth-graders in the hopes of winning the upcoming Battle Of The Bands – all while attempting to hide his true identity.
WHAT AGE IS SCHOOL OF ROCK APPROPRIATE FOR?
School Of Rock The Musical is recommended for audiences aged 6 and over. Parental discretion is advised as the show contains occasional strong language.
HOW LONG IS SCHOOL OF ROCK?
School Of Rock The Musical is 2 hours and 30 minutes including one interval. Performances are normally at 7.30pm Wednesday to Saturday and on Monday evening, with matinee performances at 2.30pm on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
WHERE IS THE SHOW PLAYING IN LONDON?
The production is currently playing at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in Covent Garden. The nearest stations to the show are Holborn (300m) or Covent Garden (300m). You can also get to the Gillian Lynne Theatre via overground train to London Charing Cross (1.1km).
WILL IT BE TOURING?
There are no current touring dates planned. The only place to see it is the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London’s West End.
WHO IS IN THE SCHOOL OF ROCK LONDON CAST?
There are 36 child actors who play the 12 members of the band. The young cast all play their own instruments live on stage every single night.
Dewey Finn is played by Stephen Leask. Stephen’s stage credits include One Man, Two Guvnors and Troilus & Cressida. You may have spotted him on the TV as he’s also appeared in Doctors, EastEnders, and Our World War.
Rosalie Mullins is played by Florence Andrews. Florence originated the role of Rosalie in the West End production of the show. Her other stage credits include Once, Miss Atomic Bomb, and Wicked.
Ned Schneebly is played by Alan Pearson. Alan most recently appeared as The Mad Hatter in Alice’s Adventures Underground. He’s also appeared in One Man, Two Guvnors, and Avenue Q.
Patty Di Marco is played by Michelle Francis. You might recognise Michelle from her appearances in Jersey Boys, The Importance Of Being Earnest, and Shrek The Musical.
