The Royal Opera House will host an exclusive live screening of Yuli – The Carlos Acosta Story in its Linbury Theatre on Wednesday 3 April.
Directed by Icíar Bollaín (Take My Eyes, Even The Rain) and written by Paul Laverty (I, Daniel Blake), Yuli – The Carlos Acosta Story tells the story of the acclaimed dancer and choreographer, who grew up in Cuba before moving to London to achieve international acclaim.
The film is based on Acosta’s autobiography No Way Home – A Cuban Dancer’s Story, and had its World Premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival, where it won the Best Screenplay Award. It has gone on to receive five nominations for the Spanish ‘Goya’ awards including Best New Actor for Acosta, Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The title refers to the nickname given to Acosta by his father, Pedro. Captivated by the world of dance from a young age, he began to build his own story, becoming the first black Principal dancer with The Royal Ballet in London, where he forged a legendary 17-year career.
Fittingly, the special film screening will take place in the Royal Opera House, where Acosta cemented his reputation. The screening will include a post interview and Q&A with Carlos Acosta, Icíar Bollaín and Paul Laverty.
