Opera while you shop

Pop into Oxford Street department store Selfridges on 8 or 13 September and you may be in for a surprise. Two mini-operas, produced by The Opera Group, will be performed impromptu-style around the shop during the day.

The two bitesized operas – Out Of The Ordinary by David Bruce and Anything Money Can Buy by Laura Bowler, both with lyrics by Alastair Middleton – are based on retail themes and tell a complete story in just five minutes of music and lyrics. They will be performed on the shop floor by a cast of professional singers.

The operas have been commissioned by Selfridges to complement a new full-length work by The Opera Group, Edward Rushton’s The Shops, which plays at the Royal Opera House on 19-22 September.
