The National Theatre is providing a less raucous alternative to the Notting Hill Festival this bank holiday weekend with a quirky, urban reinterpretation of that most English of traditions, the village fete.

Vegetable competitions and cake stalls will take over the National Theatre Square on 28 and 29 August, but in The Alternative Village Fete the stall holders are performance artists and craft-makers intent on putting their own spin on this traditional event.

The fun includes performances and activities for all the family, with live music, cucumber sandwich throwing and wheelchair square dancing.

The Alternative Village Fete, which is free to attend, forms part of the National Theatre’s Watch This Space outdoor summer festival, which has been running from 23 June and ends on 26 September. For more information visit the Watch This Space website.
