NotMoses searches for voice of Jesus

The search is on for a teenager to voice the son of God in the Arts Theatre’s forthcoming premiere of Gary Sinyor’s biblical comedy NotMoses.

The Leon The Pig Farmer writer and director’s playwriting debut will play at the Leicester Square venue from 10 March, with open auditions taking place on 10 January to find a talented comedic performer who can voice the pivotal role of Jesus.

Explaining what the show is looking for in the boy or girl who will win the timely recorded part, Sinyor commented: “It’s irrelevant to me what sex, religion – or lack of religion – the applicant is. Whoever is funniest will have their voice recorded in conversation with God and that will be played back for the whole run.”

Described as “A comedy of biblical proportions”, NotMoses tells the story of a crying baby who is plucked from his basket by a princess only to be dumped back in the Nile when she sees a nicer little offering: Moses.

The rejected NotMoses grows up to be a disgruntled slave, while Prince Moses studies accountancy at Pharaoh’s court. Then both men are forced to flee into the Sinai desert, where they make kebabs on the burning bush and the Good Lord himself orders them to lead the Jews out of bondage and into a land full of cows and bees.

The production will play at the Arts Theatre until 14 May and will follow the venue’s current festive offerings The Blues Brothers Xmas Special and A Christmas Carol, and Ruby Wax’s one-woman show Sane New World.

NotMoses auditions will take place at the Arts Theatre on 10 January, with registration at 10:00.
