The National Theatre’s production of Follies, winner of this year’s Best Musical Revival Olivier Award, is being screened for free at the River Stage Festival this weekend.
The National Theatre Live recording of the show, which stars the likes of Imelda Staunton, Tracie Bennett and Janie Dee (all in Olivier nominated roles) alongside Philip Quast and Peter Forbes, will be screened from 7pm on Sunday 12 August to mark the end of the Festival.
Set in 1971, New York, Follies follows the reunion of a group of showgirls at the theatre where they used to perform which is about to be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves.

The acclaimed production is directed by Dominic Cooke and was nominated for ten Olivier Awards at this year’s ceremony in total, winning two.
The National Theatre is programming the final festival weekend, which begins Friday 10 August, with a mix of family focused workshops, sing along bands, a groundbreaking new circus show, a tea dance and live music and DJ’s.
