Yes, it is truly the day of love, but there are so many different tales of love you can find on in Theatreland at the moment. Check out all the different stories about love you can catch in London at the moment, and all of them are in Show Time, meaning you can get tickets from just £10 – £50! From tales of romance to the escapades of best friends to denouncing exes, there’s something for everyone in this list!
Across-the-ages love
If you’re looking for that forever, romantic ballad, fairytale love, look no further. Take it real old school with new productions of both Persuasion and Wuthering Heights both currently playing in London. Both are tales of love and longing that span decades. Emily Brontë and Jane Austen are masters of romance but you’ll have to watch them to find out whether our heroines get happy endings.
One of the most enduring on-stage romances is actually a tragedy in Les Misérables. I mean, yes, Eponine’s love is unrequited, but On My Own is one of the greatest love songs of all time!
If you’re looking for a twist on a classic, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella takes a traditional fairytale romance and turns it on its head. You’ll find unexpected romances as well as a big injection of humour all set in a cynical, image-obsessed kingdom.
Not just romance
The biggest loves of our lives aren’t always great romances. The greatest love story in Frozen in my opinion isn’t Anna and Hans but Anna and Elsa – two sisters who re-discover the strength of their love for each other after a childhood of isolation.
Family is everything in Mamma Mia, too. While Sophie’s searching for her dad and preparing for her wedding, it’s the bond between her and her mum that really shines.
There’s a lot of love floating around in The Choir Of Man. Love between friends, supporting friends through heartbreak and, let’s be honest, love for that great British institution; the pub. It’s a great place to gather up the people that you love and raise a pint!
Bad break-up?
If you’re angry at your ex, we’ve got six women for you who share your pain. The ex-wives of Henry VIII are the perfect anti-romantic antidote, so grab your friends and head to Six if some cathartic complaining and female empowerment is what you need this Valentine’s day!
You could even follow Juliet’s post-Romeo jaunt across Paris, accompanied by the nineties and noughties soundtrack of your dreams. & Juliet imagines the star-crossed heroine’s life living it up with her nurse and her friends. It’s also great to see a queer love story represented on-stage in the form of Francois and May!
