London Theatre News Today: Thursday 9 January

The full casting of Kevin Elyot’s Coming Clean has today been announced. Following its acclaimed 35th anniversary production last year, the King’s Head Theatre’s revival is set to break hearts as it runs at Trafalgar Studios 2 until 1 February.

Lee Knight (Much Ado About Nothing, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, The Spiritualist) will star as Tony, Elliot Hadley (BBC’s Preston Passion, Dark Matters for Discovery Channel USA, ITV’s The Halcyon) as William/Jurgen, Stanton Plummer-Cambridge (Macbeth, The Tempest and BBC’s Black Earth Rising) as Greg, and Jonah Rzeskiewicz as Robert in his West End and professional London debut.

Set in a North London flat in Kentish Town, Coming Clean follows the story of a seemingly perfect couple – writer Tony, and his partner of five years, Greg. They’re in a committed relationship but with room for a little more fun on the side whenever it takes their fancy. The only rule? Never sleep with the same man twice. When drop-dead gorgeous Robert walks into their lives, their differing attitudes towards love and commitment become clear.

The remarkably earnest and enrapturing play won Elyot the Samuel Beckett Award for promising writers upon its London premiere at the Bush Theatre in 1982. Tickets flew off the shelves upon its return last year so be sure to grab yours to avoid any disappointment!

And we have another casting announcement, but this time for the English language World premiere of La Cage Aux Folles [The Play] playing at the Park Theatre from 12 February – 21 March.

Jean Poiret’s seminal classic created four blockbuster films and the Tony Award-winning musical and now there’s a chance for audiences to see the original, riotous and heartfelt farce for the first time in the English language.

This new translation by theatrical legend Simon Callow will be directed by Park Theatre’s Artistic Director, Jez Bond and will star Michael Matus (Richard III – National Theatre and Headlong Theatre Tour, and King Lear – The Duke of York’s Theatre) in the role of Georges and Paul Hunter (founder of Told by an Idiot) as Albin. The cast is completed by Sarah Lam, Syrus Lowe, Peter Straker, Mark Cameron, Arthur Hughes, Simon Hepworth, Louise Bangay, Georgina Ambrey and William Nelson.

The story follows nightclub owner Georges and his dazzling drag artiste partner Albin as they create the most spectacular shows in St. Tropez. But when Georges’ son Laurent announces his engagement to the daughter of a notoriously right-wing politician determined to bring the curtain down on the town’s vibrant nightlife, the real performance begins. As Georges and Albin entertain their soon-to-be in laws and attempt to conceal their true nature for the sake of their son, how long can the façade last?
