When you’ve recently hit eight million theatregoers, enjoyed a tenth birthday at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, and announced a UK tour, you’ve plenty to celebrate. Fortunately for us, at the production’s recent media night, we were able to speak to returning brilliant cast members Willemijn Verkaik and Suzie Mathers about what the show’s incredible success – and the spectacular production itself – mean to them.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Gregory Maguire that re-imagined the stories and characters created by L Frank Baum in The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Wicked tells the incredible untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
Now one of the Top 10 longest running musicals in West End history, Wicked was voted London’s Best Night Out (2011 Evening Standard Theatre Awards) and has been seen by 42 million people in 13 countries worldwide.
The cast includes Willemijn Verkaik (Elphaba), Suzie Mathers (Glinda), Oliver Savile (Fiyero), Sue Kelvin (Madame Morrible), Mark Curry (The Wizard), Martin Ball (Doctor Dillamond), Sarah McNicholas (Nessarose), Idriss Kargbo (Boq), Alice Fearn (Standby for Elphaba) and Carina Gillespie (Standby for Glinda).
