Inches Apart, the winner of the Old Vic New Voices Theatre503 Award 2009, will receive a fully staged production at Theatre503 next month.
The devised piece, which focuses on the lives of individuals and asks what it means to be on the margins of society, will run at Theatre503 from 12 May until 6 June.
Run in partnership by the Old Vic’s New Voices scheme, which aims to help support emerging theatre talent, and the new writing venue Theatre503, the Old Vic New Voices Theatre503 Award is an annual accolade offering one production a fully-funded four week run at a high-profile London venue. Open to artists younger than 30, the piece should engage a youthful audience, be performable by a young cast and be directed by an emerging director. In the case of Inches Apart, Rachel Briscoe, who has previously worked at the Oval House theatre, Arcola theatre, BAC and Royal Court, takes directing duties.
Speaking about the production, Theatre503’s Artistic Directors Paul Robinson and Tim Roseman said: “We are delighted by this year’s winners. Inches Apart is an exhilarating piece of theatre – at once hilarious and poignant, breathtaking and profound. The play is a perfect example of a group of extraordinarily talented emerging artists being given the opportunity to create a piece of fearless theatre.”
Old Vic Artistic Director Kevin Spacey added: “I am delighted that we are offering this new company the chance to stage their debut production. The company’s energy is matched by their enthusiasm to produce work that is bold, relevant and unique in style. For these reasons, they represent entirely what this award and Old Vic New Voices are about.”
